Here’s a post that simultaneously throws back to May 30, 2015 when Alberta Ballet invited audiences to The Creation Experience and looks ahead to October 18, 2015 when the University of Alberta Music Department presents Contemporary Canadian. What ties these events together? Buzz — a musical piece by U of A composer Howard Bashaw.
An excerpt of Bashaw’s Buzz was performed by U of A violinist Guillaume Tardif at the Alberta Ballet event this spring when audiences were invited behind-the-scenes to experience the making of a new ballet on the fly. Over the span of an hour, artistic director Jean Grand-Maitre worked with husband and wife company members Garrett Groat and Hayna Gutierrez to create a dance piece on the spot.
The resulting dance beautifully juxtaposed the flow and tension inherent in Bashaw’s frenetic Buzz score.
“I think Buzz will quickly rise to become an important, substantial work in contemporary violin repertoire,” says Tardif. “Howard is truly in the full swing of his aesthetic world with this piece.”
Tardif is slotted to play Bashaw’s complete Buzz suite as part of the U of A’s mainstage concert Contemporary Canadian on October 18, 2015 at 3 p.m. in Convocation Hall. But the buzz around Bashaw’s compositions extends further!
Contemporary Canadian will also feature U of A pianist Roger Admiral performing Bashaw’s 15 for Piano, a work he recently performed in Vancouver (May, 2015) and is set to perform in Brazil this August, 2015.
